My Response to Week 1: Woman Waiting to Take a Photograph

1. The time frame of this vignette took place around the early 2000s during the day as mentioned in one of the sentences written by David Eggers. Why in the early 2000s, the Toyota Camry mentioned in the writing was made around that time. Why during the day, as explained in the writing, "The store is located in a very poor neighborhood: the windows are barred and at night a roll-down steel door covers the storefront", this implied that the young woman had decided to take the photograph during the day and not a night since the store would be closed and from my own personal experience would be more complicated to take the photo.

2. The text implied towards photographers states that they have to have a good eye for taking pictures that can later be understood by the viewer whether its in something small like a gallery or huge like a museum. The photograph has to impact the viewers eye, they need to understand what the message conveys.

3. In my opinion, David's attitude towards the young woman is respectable. One clear notion of this is halfway through his writing, "she will make a picture that would be considered trenchant, or even poignant - either way the product of a sharp and observant eye." This explains that he sees this woman as determined and insistent in capturing the photograph, even on her day off. She could have been doing something else but it is evident that she enjoy photography that she is willing to push herself even on a free day. "The product of a sharp and observant eye" justifies his admiration for her. (not respectable to the less fortunate, and the woman.)

4. David's use of the word "go-getter" applies to the women who is willing to wait for minutes and even hours to get the perfect photograph for herself. From the repetition I hear I am getting this thought that the women is only doing this to make money and become famous.

5. It explains that a photograph taken at such a run down place, the perfect photo will eventually display its meaning to thousands or millions of people all around the world who will look back at it and its deep meaning.

6. The idea I came to realize and did not see it for sometime was that this woman was determined to capture the perfect photograph, but at what cost? In doing so the possibility of her becoming well known would mean she was doing it out of only for herself and only herself, it was clear that she did not want to get out of the car the entire time she was there, did not have any clear obligation to connect with the people in that community and only had the interest of taking something for her own wellbeing.
